Milei’s Party Triumphs in Argentina’s Parliamentary Elections
This win outpaced the opposition’s Fuerza Patria, backed by the Peronist movement, which earned 24.5% of the vote. La Libertad Avanza's success was particularly marked by its strong performances in critical regions such as Buenos Aires, Cordoba, Santa Fe, and Mendoza.
The elections were pivotal, with citizens voting to fill nearly half of the seats in the Chamber of Deputies (127 out of 257) and one-third of the Senate (24 out of 72).
These elections were seen as a referendum on President Milei’s governance, serving as an important gauge of public sentiment and a crucial determinant of his ability to push forward significant reforms in Congress.
La Libertad Avanza's performance was impressive, winning 64 seats in the Chamber of Deputies. Starting December 10, the party will hold a total of 94 out of 257 seats in the lower house.
While this still does not constitute a majority, the gain is substantial enough to protect the presidency against potential impeachment efforts and to maintain the ability to veto legislation.
After receiving news of his party's strong support, President Milei celebrated the victory at his campaign headquarters. "Today has been a historic day," he proclaimed.
"The Argentine people have left behind decadence and chosen progress. Today we have passed the tipping point. Today begins the construction of a great Argentina."
