Javier Milei’s Party Wins in Argentina's Parliamentary Elections
Milei’s La Libertad Avanza party triumphed over the Peronist opposition group Fuerza Patria, which garnered 24.5% of the vote.
The ruling party also managed to win key regions, including the capital Buenos Aires, Cordoba, Santa Fe, and Mendoza.
The elections were of great significance, as voters went to the polls to renew nearly half of the seats in the Chamber of Deputies (127 out of 257) and one-third of the Senate (24 out of 72).
For President Milei’s administration, the elections were seen as a referendum on his government. The results were a reflection of public sentiment and would play a crucial role in determining his ability to push through major reforms in Congress.
La Libertad Avanza delivered a remarkable performance, winning 64 seats in the Chamber of Deputies.
Beginning December 10, the party will hold 94 out of 257 seats in the lower house.
Although this does not grant a majority, the substantial increase in seats will be enough to uphold presidential vetoes and prevent any potential impeachment proceedings, which some opposition factions had threatened to pursue.
After the results were announced, President Milei celebrated at his campaign headquarters.
"Today has been a historic day," he remarked.
"The Argentine people have left behind decadence and chosen progress. Today we have passed the tipping point. Today begins the construction of a great Argentina."
