Powerful Earthquake Rocks South of Chile

(MENAFN) A powerful magnitude 7.5 earthquake struck south of Chile in the Drake Passage on Thursday, according to the US Geological Survey (USGS). The quake occurred at a depth of approximately 10.8 kilometers (6.71 miles), sending tremors across multiple cities in Chile and neighboring Argentina.

No immediate reports of damage have emerged, though the earthquake caused widespread concern across the region. In response to the seismic event, Chile's Navy Hydrographic and Oceanographic Service (SHOA) issued a tsunami warning and ordered the evacuation of coastal zones.

Initially, the quake raised fears of dangerous tsunami waves along the coastline. However, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center later confirmed to Bloomberg in an emailed statement that the tsunami threat had dissipated. The center clarified that any resulting coastal waves are expected to remain under 0.3 meters (1 foot), significantly reducing concerns of major flooding or destruction.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation as aftershocks remain a possibility.
